About Cataracts

Understanding Cataracts: Causes, Symptoms, and Treatment in Singapore

You may notice changes in your vision as the clouding of the lens develops within your eye, affecting how light reaches the retina. This process is commonly linked to an ageing eye, where the lens gradually becomes less clear over time.

Ageing is the most common factor, but cataracts can also develop earlier due to underlying conditions or environmental exposure.

Contributing factors may include:

These changes tend to occur gradually, which is why symptoms may not be obvious in the early stages.

These changes in the lens can affect how you see in different lighting conditions and distances. You may notice:

If these symptoms are affecting your daily routine, an ophthalmologist consultation can confirm or rule out cataracts.

You may first be advised to explore practical adjustments that help you cope while your condition is monitored. Commonly recommended ways to manage early cataracts include:

These adjustments can help in the early stages, but they may not provide long-term clarity.

Procedure Options

Cataract Surgery Procedures

Vision changes due to cataracts may seem like minor inconveniences at first, but they can end up interfering with your ability to read, drive, or recognise faces. When this happens, it may be time to consider cataract surgery.

During the procedure, the clouded natural lens is removed and replaced with an artificial intraocular lens (IOL). This is typically performed through a small, micro-incision, allowing access to the lens while limiting disruption to the eye.

Two approaches are commonly used, depending on your condition:

Phacoemulsification

Femtosecond Laser-Assisted Cataract Surgery (FLACS)

This is a bladeless option used in selected cases. A laser is used to assist with certain parts of the cataract surgery, such as creating the incision and softening the cataract before its removal.

We may consider FLACS if your cataract is more complex or if your eye requires a more tailored approach.

Your IOL Options

Choosing the Right Lens Implant (IOL)

Before cataract surgery, a specialist will carry out detailed eye measurements and assess your eye health to determine which IOL options are suitable for you.

Based on this, you’ll be guided through the available choices and how each one may affect your vision at different distances. Your daily habits, such as reading, using screens, or driving, help shape which option is more appropriate.

Here are the different types of IOL we may recommend, depending on your priorities and preferences.

If you prioritise clear distance vision for driving or outdoor activities
If you prefer less reliance on glasses for multiple distances
If you want a balance between distance and intermediate vision
If you have astigmatism
